"Galería Artespacio exhibió las fotografías de Elisa García de la Huerta, que forman parte de una serie que investiga la relación entre la historia personal y el apego a lugares para recrear paisajes psicológicos. La artista aparece sola dentro del espacio urbano, ligeramente vestida de blanco (símbolo de inocencia) y, sin zapatos, se expone a los elementos. Se utiliza el cuerpo como una reflexión sobre los estados mentales. Sus tres fotografías forman parte de una serie desarrollada entre el 2008 y el 2011 que aborda sentimientos de sufrimiento emocional, tristeza, temor, lucha, rabia y ansiedad, continuando con la temática autobiográfica de la artista. Las performances presentan el reto de ser capturadas fielmente para representar la esencia del momento. La técnica elegida, fotografía, es una copia lumínica de la realidad considerada evidencia directa de un evento que vemos. En esta serie, el color y la definición de la imagen permiten investigar la superficie simple pero rica en detalles."

" The Trip"

“THE TRIP” is my most recent multichannel video installation at SVA School of Visual Arts MFA program, this installation is basically ephemeral and process oriented since in this progression I found these lapses of concealment and restoration. My thinking gravitates toward psychoanalysis, existentialism and new wave feminism. I self identified my ongoing study as a matter of disorientation or a paradox of creation and acceptance of clarity within confusion, characteristics that are particularly expresses in these peace The trip is a metaphor of mental and emotional instability related with the idea of travel, disorder or chaos.

Breaking canons of authoritarianism embodying expression and emotions, my work creates for me a platform of understanding, reviewing, challenging and infringement of patterns in a form of escape and moreover as liberation or a lack of self-determination of identity forgetting standards of culture specificities. Defining a form of individualization of a particular collective memory of compassion, intensity and freewill.

I see my art practice as a reclaim of self-reflection suggesting other ways to operate in the world. Painting, sculpture, video and installation is my platform of searching, walking around boundaries between these genres and extracting information from our daily and accessible world of technology and detachment to consumption rising to American models which motivates me to make use of objects with history and memory emphasizing and negotiating new hierarchy of emotional values.

These installation suggest a promise of escape, fantasy and pleasure, but at the same time the constant disorientation and confusion shows aggravation and artificiality contain in the treatment and transformation of the materials and videos: collage of different nature of imagery, some of theme belong to a common memory of emotions related with water, nature, movement, old fottage and icons. Others are manipulation from Disney vocabulary in this case the Wizard of Oz and Fantasia, emphasizing how these images shape ideals and metaphors in our memory from childhood.

Finally, one of the channels shows a video of a performance, based in "Money Money" Lady Gaga's video clip which is also combined with videos I selected from YouTube, this extends from pop music, enforcing plurality, consumption and the exploitation of longing.

Honeymoon

Video Installation

Fragile Structure made with fabrics, blankets, strings and domestic objects and two video channels.

Video projection, duration: 15 minutes loop

Video channel in a little monitor, duration: 1 min 30 seconds loop

Honeymoon is inspired by my godmother's weeding memory and found home movie, after keep thinking in the idea of "how we dream to get married as a princess" when we are little girls and how we are culturally formed by specifics canons (traditional conservative catholic Latin American). This work swims deeply into disillusion that we get to suffer while we grow up with fetishist and idealistic ideas, "destroying fairytales to assume adulthood". Also it navigates and cross travels into child, adolescent and adulthood, rolls inside gender, cultural and identity issues, knitting and linking different times and psychological states in our present – us - character of “performer” and audience.

Creating a set of rules where in One Week I will perform a series of stereotypical episodes of my childish quintessential ideal fairytale of a honeymoon, I will expose myself, being open to circumstances of contradictions and a encumbered assortment of emotions in a “relationship”: between my “grown up Teddy Bear” (big stuffed animal) and the self.

The 15 min video presents, in it own process: simplicity, capricious feelings, maternity, care, frustration, attraction, desire, objectivity, anger, sadness and an under layer of loneliness and subjectivity. All this flavor’s fruit basket of feelings are possibly contained by a delicate but rustic space of secret and privacy that immerses you in this melodramatic journey.

My entire childhood is held on my father’s Super 8 films. From this trove of captured memories, I select and manipulate particular actions or gestures within which I find ambiguous imagery. Straddling the thin line between pleasure and violence, my performances reactivate the original footage.

I use video and photography to document the performance of personal experiences - fear, anger, anxiety, sadness and pain - in secret spaces. My tent is a place for spiritual growth. Through an intuitive process of poised intensity, I use strategies of concealment and juxtaposition to repair what is lost to the conscious mind. Profound emotionality intersects gaps in memory, vulnerability and instability surround the experience recalled.

“Solitary Birthday” is a video installation. A private fort made from a pastiche of domestic textiles and strewn with cult objects of birthday nostalgia, this piece relates my wistful recollection to ritual traditions of faith and culture.

The projection of multi-channel video inside my own comfortable cave-like environment creates a paradoxical relationship between the space and the images in movement. Cloistering past and present, the secluded space offers viewers a promise of privacy and an instance of intimate confession.

Emerge to be Seen

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents "Emerge to be Seen," a multimedia exhibition by students using light, transparency, narrative and layers to create work that invites multiple interpretations. Curated byKathryn DeRaffele and Maria Dubon.

Elisa Garcia de la Huerta uses film footage of her childhood made by her father with a Super 8 camera for her video The Pool. From these "captured memories," she selects and manipulates particular actions or gestures where there is an ambiguity between pleasure and pain. The Pool features two video channels that play simultaneously in a loop. One is a scene of children playing naked in a pool using the Super 8 footage, and the other documents a performance by the artist, who is fully dressed and suspended beneath the surface of water. Garcia de la Huerta is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
